Privacy
This site is a set of plain pages. It has no accounts, no forms, and no advertising. It counts visits with Google Analytics, described below, and you can turn that off at any time.
What we collect
Nothing directly. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, which, like every web host, keeps standard server logs (your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser type) for security and operations under GitHub's privacy statement. The Society does not receive or store those logs.
Fonts and images
The typefaces and every photograph are served from this site itself. No font service or image host sees your visit.
The map page
The tour map draws its street tiles (map data from OpenStreetMap) from the OpenFreeMap service, so when you open the map page your browser requests map images from tiles.openfreemap.org, which sees your IP address and the tiles you view, under OpenFreeMap's posted terms. The Where am I? button asks your phone for its location only when you tap it; the position is used on your screen and is never sent to us. Directions links open Google Maps, whose own policies then apply.
Camera view
The camera view uses your phone's camera only while it is open. The picture stays on your phone unless you choose to share it.
Sharing
The share buttons open Facebook or your phone's own share sheet only when you tap them. No Facebook pixel or other tracker is loaded on any page.
Analytics, and how to turn it off
To know which stories get read and which businesses get looked up, this site uses Google Analytics (GA4). It sets cookies in your browser and records, through Google, the pages you view, taps on the route choice, next-stop, business, museum, and support links, your browser and device type, and an approximate location Google derives from your network address. Google processes this data for the Society under Google's privacy policy and the Google Analytics terms. Advertising features, ad personalization, and Google Signals are turned off. Analytics data is retained in the Society's reports for 14 months.
To turn it off, use the Analytics choices link in the footer of any page and tap No thanks: collection stops, the Google Analytics cookies this site set are removed, and the choice is remembered on that browser until you change it. Clearing your browser data also removes the cookies, and it clears the remembered choice, so counting resumes until you turn it off again.
